A number of students will encounter challenges with substance abuse or addiction during their time at Cal Poly. The problem may be one of coming to class hung over or stoned, either occasionally or chronically. It is estimated that 28% of college drop-outs are related to substance abuse. Early intervention is a key to student success and often helps students meet their academic and personal goals.

| Signs of an Alcohol/ Drug Problem:
- Smell of alcohol, unkempt appearance
- Dulled, depressed "Duh" look of marijuana intoxication
- Poor class attendance and participation
- Lack of motivation or interest
- Anxious or irritable mood with an inability to concentrate
- Irrational, impulsive demands for special treatment

| Ways to Intervene:
- Express your concern about the student in a supportive manner while maintaining limits.
- Describe the behaviors you have observed that are impacting his or her academic performance.
- Avoid arguing with the student or confrontation.
- Direct student to Counseling Services or Peer Health Education or their websites: http://www.hcs.calpoly.edu/counseling/ http://www.hcs.calpoly.edu/peerhealth/ .
- Expect defensiveness -- don't take it personally.
- Seek consultation with a professional at Counseling Services.
