The Academic Advising Council had one-hour meetings twice a month during the previous academic year. The two student representatives nominated by ASI for fall quarter were unable to attend the meetings due to time conflicts. For winter and spring, the student representatives, Jessica Gibbons and Jason Scott, regularly attended the meetings. We were very appreciative of the students’ active participation on this committee.
Recommendation :
The co-chairs met with CSU Peer Review Team in May 2006 to discuss academic advising on campus. The Team Leader strongly recommended that Cal Poly increase the monetary award for the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Advisor from $500 to the same amount that the Distinguished Teachers receive.
Some of the activities of the committee this year include:
- Held a successful retreat in early September to prioritize and plan events for the coming year. Our number one concern was the lack of adequate staffing in the Evaluations Unit of the Office of Academic Records and the resulting reduced level of service to students.
- Met several times with Tom Zuur, the Registrar, to discuss staffing issues, reduced services and adverse implications for student success. Those discussions were productive and the level of staff support has increased.
- Met several times with Kimi Ikeda to receive updates on the PeopleSoft Student Administration implementation and to express concerns about the lack of future printed class schedules.
- Met with Linda Dalton and David Conn to discuss and share ideas about summer quarter enrollment.
- Planned and held our first Advising Awareness Week, October 24-28, 2005 in conjunction with members of the AdviseNet group. The event theme was, “See an Advisor – Graduate on Time,” and it involved students, faculty and staff from both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. The Advising Fair, which was held during University Hour, in Chumash Auditorium, was the most successful event, with approximately 200 students attending.
- Coordinated the advertising and selection of this year’s Outstanding Faculty Advisor.
- Created a marking plan to enhance the visibility of campus advising services, including staffing “Lucy Booths” with advisors, placing ads in the Mustang Daily, writing a newsletter, ordering sandwich boards for all college advising centers, and redesigning the Advising web site.
- Gave two presentations to faculty and staff through the Center for Teaching and Learning: Advising 101-The Nuts and Bolts of Advising and Advising 102- One-on-One With A Student: What Do I Do Now?. Both were well-attended.
Respectfully submitted:
