Outstanding Faculty Advisor 2006-2007: Abe Lynn
The Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award was developed to recognize outstanding achievement by a faculty member in the area of student advising. Nominations were solicited from faculty, staff, and students across campus. A subcommittee of the Advising Council reviewed the applications.
Professor Lynn teaches Architectural Engineering for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Below are some excerpts from his nomination packet:
“My roommates and I came up with the slogan “ask abe” 3 years ago while contemplating t-shirt slogans because Abe is always willing to help us out, whether on advising for registration, conceptualizing analyses, or finding internship opportunities for the summer. Even when you aren’t in his classes and he isn’t teaching a particular subject, he is the man who can answer any question and explain it so that you will understand as well. Great guy, and excellent mentor.”"
“Abe advised me better than any advisor at any school (and believe me, I met with a lot of advisors from a lot of schools).”
“For me, Abe has been more of a lifesaver than even an advisor could ever be…. ”
“In my six years as an ARCE at Cal Poly, Abe Lynn has without a doubt been crucial to my academic success in his role and an extremely knowledgeable and effective faculty advisor. Even though I’m technically assigned to another professor, I always go to Abe if he’s available because of the great experiences I’ve had working with him each time. He is thoughtful and understanding of the ‘student condition’ and is very creative in the way that he communicates and with the potential solutions he helps to create.”
“Abe was my rock when he and I shared the department office. I know I must have asked him the same questions time and time again and he was always willing to answer them for me. Over the years, I witnessed Abe advise what appeared to be almost everyone in the department. From faculty to students, to parents and outside professionals, Abe was always the one sought after for the most current, and most reliable, information.”
