Announcements:

  • In lieu of the next meeting, Katie Tool proposed that AdviseNet attendees join Advising Council members in setting up, breaking down and staffing the new Advising Booth that will be on display for the first time at Dexter Lawn on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 9-3pm. A sign up sheet was passed around.
  • A suggestion was made that during the year the Advising Booth be displayed in different locations on campus such as the Mott gym lawn.

Co-chairs (Bonnie McKim and Katie Tool) passed out last year presenters/topics and index cards and asked for attendees to write down ideas they have for future meetings.

Suggestions offered during the meeting included:

  • Invite Bill Durgin to come speak about university vision and support for advising
  • Visit different departments on campus in lieu of meeting in the UU
  • Ask Advising Council for budgetary support to bring in student development professionals who can provide professional development training in areas related to advising such as those offered at the NACADA conference.

Please send additional suggestions to either of them.

First Speaker: Juliette Duke- Sophomore Advising Week

Oct. 22-24 – 4-7pm at Cerro Vista Apartments

  • Two colleges per night will have advisors present to offer academic and career advising.
  • If you or your respective area/department would like to participate and/or have ideas for programming, please contact Juliette.

  • Based on a poll given to residents in the Cerro Vista apartments, 150 of the 200 responses received said they had never seen an advisor. This program is being offered to help bridge that gap.

  • An idea was shared with Juliette to have someone give a presentation to the Cerro Vista residents prior to the Sophomore Advising Week on the use and creation of the academic portfolio so that students would have a binder prepared to bring with them to the advising session.

  • For this term, it was discussed that it would be best for college advisors to please bring a sample academic portfolio to their meeting date to share with students and encourage them to develop and maintain their own binder to track their progress and bring with them to future advising appointments.

  • A newsletter was distributed that indicated programming planned for the entire quarter.

  • A question was asked regarding programming for transfer students. Nothing in particular is planned at this time but they are interested in developing programs to support their transfer students. Any ideas are welcome.

Second Speaker- Patricia Stewart – Academic Skills Center – Study Skills Seminars

  • Study skills seminars are offered between weeks 3-6 in the Kennedy Library, Bldg. 35, Room 202. Space is available for 35 students and advanced sign-up is not required. Seminars begin ten minutes after the hour and last 50 minutes.

  • Different topics are scheduled for each seminar including:

    • Time Management, Textbook processing, Note Taking Systems, Test Preparation and Strategies, Understanding Procrastination, Memory Skills, Test Taking Strategies and Reading Rate and Comprehension

  • Online study skills library is available for students unable to attend a seminar.

  • Students are welcome to come in and work 1:1 with Trish Stewart or Bill Sydnor as well.

Third Speaker: Denise Campbell and Jeff Jacobs – First Year Experience (FYE) Program

  • This is the 3rd year the program/committee has existed.
  • Website will be shared with the public soon. It will provide a library of resources and links to first - year students, including transfer students.
  • A new exciting feature is the weekly newsletter that will be sent to all new students. It has 4 components:

·         Study Tip of the Week

·         Healthy Living Tip

·         Campus Resource

·         Quote of the Week

  • Newsletter archive will be available online.
  • Resources will be available to help parents of new students with their role as a productive an effective parent of a new student.
  • FYE has begun a mentoring program. The program is being piloted this year with Parks and Rec Department. Currently there are 30 students who have been paired with an upper- division student.
  • The goal is to open it up to the entire CAFÉ’S college next year and the university the year after. It is still in an implementation phase. Volunteer mentors are creating a handbook and have been notified that they will be given one unit of Rec 400 credit for their work.
  • Jeff will be leading presentations regarding this mentoring program to faculty through the Center for Teaching and Learning.
